A systematic analysis and meticulous research has come up with a comprehensive explanation of the connection between specific gems and the planets. The fact that physical, emotional and mental well being is deeply connected with the influence of planets and precious stones is something that has been accepted by societies around the world even from very ancient times.
Nav Ratna - The Astral Nine Gems
It is not commonly known or understood that there is a significant connection between astronomy, astrology and gemology. While the first deals the study of stars and planets, the second studies their effects on humans, and the third is concerned with the study of gems. Astro-gemology combines the three and makes a scientific study into their inter-relationship. The link between gems and stars and planets has been exhaustively studied for centuries, especially in India and other South East Asian countries. In Sidereal Astrology the term planet is applied to specific mathematical conjunctions and celestial bodies that include the planets, the sun, the moon and other stars, and the term will have the same meaning here. Astrologers and astronomers have successfully established that similar energies and vibrations are released from astral sources and gems. They have also been able to identify which gems and which planets have connected energy flows and vibrations, maintaining that it is the astral bodies that are the source and control of the energy in the gems connected to each of them. Studies have also been conducted in enhancing positive energies while subduing negative ones.
Different combinations of gems
A systematic analysis and meticulous research has come up with a comprehensive explanation of the connection between specific gems and the planets. The fact that physical, emotional and mental well being is deeply connected with the influence of planets and precious stones is something that has been accepted by societies around the world even from very ancient times. Financial prosperity and success in worldly endeavors also have been attributed to these factors. Kings and spiritual rulers were known to wear several gems in order to get the best of the positive energies emanating from their ruling planets, while warding off any evil effects at the same time. Astrologers would determine which gems were most suited for the ruling planets of each day, month and time.
One well known combination of gems is the Sapta Ratna, which involves the seven gems that are governed by the same planets that govern the seven days of the week. Some people wear talismans combining all the seven stones together, while others wear them in individual rings or other ornaments - one for each of the corresponding days of the week. The planets for each day are Saturn - Saturday, Sun - Sunday, Moon - Monday, Mars - Tuesday, Mercury - Wednesday, Jupiter - Thursday and Venus - Friday.
The Pancha Ratna involves a combination of five gems that represent the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and space.
There is also the Tri Ratna, a combination of three gems that represent the essential constituents of the physical body - marrow, mucus and air.
In each of the combinations, the color of the gem plays an important part in determining the planet that governs it and the factors with which it is associated.
The Astral Nine Gems
The most famous combination is the one with nine gems - the Nav Ratna. The basic principle involves utilizing the mystical properties of the number nine: nine colors corresponding to nine gems and nine planets. This talisman is believed to be extremely powerful in bringing good health and fortune, and also in warding off all negative and evil influences. It is very popular among Indians. The Thais have their own version of the Nav Ratna. The combination is also used in other South East Asian nations.
The nine colors are the seven primary colors of the rainbow (violet, indigo, blue green, yellow, orange and red) along with infra red and ultra violet, combining to complete the spectrum. Colored rays are believed to contain cosmic energy that is necessary for human life. Each color radiates at its own wave length and each planet radiates its cosmic energy through its own specific color.
The nine planets are the sun, moon, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars and the two mathematical conjunctions at the northern and southern Nodes of the moon, namely Rahu and Ketu. Cosmic energy from the planets enters our ethereal body through points called "chakras", which are located at strategic points around the glandular system. Weak entry of cosmic colors or the entry of negative energy causes illness and disease. Gems have properties to enhance inflow of positive energy and also to prevent any negative energy from entering the ethereal body.
The nine gems are Blue sapphire, diamond, yellow sapphire, emerald, coral, pearl, ruby, hessonite and cat's eye. Each has its own potential for bringing good fortune, warding off evil, and curing a variety of ailments.
