Dog Collars Buying Guide @ Jewel Info 4 U

By: Ms Nandita Ray

Measuring and Buying Collars correctly

1. The collar or chain should not be a tight fit. It should sit comfortably around its neck.

2.To measure the size keep two fingers beneath the tape or take the exact size and add two inches to this measurement.

3. The other way to get the right fit is to measure the dog collar end to end, including the buckle. This can be done if an older collar is present.

Dog Collars4. Not all dog collars are sized equally, especially if it is being bought online. Each store has its own measurement.

5. Keep the physical attributes of your dog in mind before ordering a collar since each breed is different in size.

6. 'Neck' size should be a comfortable distance around your dog's throat/neck and this size should always be measured when ever a new collar is being ordered.

7. Pups and young adults are in the process of growing up so size changes.

8. Collars should lie flat and not dangle.

9. Adjustable collars are a better buy. A loose collar is far more likely to get snagged or twisted.

10. Make sure that the collar does not choke or damage its neck. Neither should it irritate it compelling it to bite or try to pull it out.

11. A dog injury due to leash straining is possible. Ergo make sure that the collar is soft.

12. Another thought to keep in mind is twisting of the collar. The collar's fit should be perfect and not lead to turning or twisting when two dogs are playing or your pet is rolling on the floor. Many dogs have suffered choking and eventual deaths.

13. Keep Safe Break - Away Collars is a collar with safety buckle that is designed to protect your dog from collar injuries. It is good for young pups or dogs in training.

14. Larger and physically powerful dogs need training collars till they get used to the collar and become docile.

15. Many types of training collars are available. Choke collars are now considered dangerous. Semi choke collars, pinch collars or prong collars are considered a better buy. Select judiciously depending on the temperament of your dog. High intensity collars for powerful dogs only!

16. Best collars are the ones with quick release mechanism. Your dog can get out instantly in an emergency or when facing discomfort.

17. For beach or the swimming pool nylon collars are the best.

18. Flashing dog collars are perfect for evening /night wear since they blink and visible 1/2 mile away. Its waterproof and the batteries last up to 24 hours. They can be clipped on collars easily.

19. Buy the collar depending on the color, size and coat of your pet.

20. Dark colors like black, brown, red or navy suit larger dogs. Whereas collars in bright and slimmer shades and shapes are best for tiny breeds.

21. Rolled leather collars prevent long hair or fur breakage. Canvas collars sit well too.

22. Check the material, construction, quality and workmanship.

23. Check for warranties and replacement policies.

24. Check the hardware i.e. the buckles and the loops. Brass or nickel is good.

25. Check washing instructions. Hand washable ones are better.

Caring for collars

1. Leather collars should not be soaked in water. Use a damp cloth to clean stains and dry completely.

2. Do not use strong detergents or bleach when washing cotton or similar collars. Take extra care with jeweled collars or collars embedded with stones. Do not rub roughly, use soft strokes.

3. A soft cloth especially a used t- shirt is good for dry wiping metal collars and tags.
