Summary:The shape of the stone refers to the physical outline when looking at it from the top. The most popular shapes are round, marcuise, peer, heart, oval and cushion. The work of faceting is of utmost importance so far as emerald cut is concerned. The term faceting is related to the cutting style of transparent stones. Simply faceting gives a mirror-reflecting-light effect. That is, how the light entering the stone is reflected from inside the gem, back to the viewer.

Millions of years ago, when this blue planet appeared in this universe, she was just like any other planet in our solar system. But soon she ascended to the queen's throne as life flourished on her. In the course of natural evolution, kinds of species emerged and finally one day the first human life arrived on the earth. In every course of his life, in all his struggles for survival, he marked his stamp of superiority. By his creative genius and sheer hard work man transformed the untamed, rugged landscape of earth into a beautiful green planet. As a perfectionist to the core and a worshiper of finer things in life, man has always endeavored to modify his surrounding. With the human touch of creativity, the splendid gifts of nature have always become more and more alluring.

For example, think about the case of shining gemstones. All their glow and glitter are the result of human innovation. It is the human brain that adds to their brilliant beauty and there generates the value. Were there no human imagination, loads of mineral-rich rocks would have remained hidden inside the earth. It is the result of the undying efforts of the most intelligent creatures of this universe, that these priceless treasures could have been excavated from the darkness of underground. But human innovation does not stop there. Intricate craftsmanship and inexplicably skillful hands extract from these chunks of stones, ravishing magnificence, that stole the hearts of every man in all ages.

The complete journey from the stage of a chunk of stone in its natural form to becoming a gorgeous piece of precious jewel, gemstones have to go through various steps and procedures like cutting and polishing. The degree of transparency and intensity of colour - these two factors rule the beauty in a stone. The cutting brings out, in the stone, the maximum possible impact of colour and transparency by minimizing its flaws. The procedure of cutting involves three aspects: the shaping, the faceting and the proportion. The shape of the stone refers to the physical outline when looking at it from the top.

Facets are varying degrees of polished surfaces in different sizes. For example, a stone may have pointed corners and covered with several geometrically arranged surfaces.

The amounts of the cut in the corner and the lengths of the surfaces will dictate how much light the gem will reflect or refract. Thus the purpose of faceting is to bring out the brilliance of a gem. So far as, aquamarine is concerned, the intensity of the colour dictates its value. Therefore, in the time cutting of aquamarine the primary consideration of the cutter is to maintain the depth of colour. Facets are those angles through which light is reflected back to the viewer's eyes. So while, low crown angles will produce higher brilliance, higher crowns or deep cut angles are used to deepen the colour. So for aquamarines, deep designs are always preferred and emerald cut is regarded as the most suitable for aquamarine.

When aquamarines are fashioned in an emerald cut, both the top and under side is given a series of flat surfaces. The bottom facets act as mirrors reflecting light and the stone looks more and more brilliant. The classical emerald cut, which developed in the middle ages, consists of sixteen facets in the upper surface of the stone and twenty in the pavilion below. Apart from the most common cushion shape, emerald cut produces good effect also in the round, pear and oval shape aquamarine. The cutter usually prefer 43 degree pavilions mains on aquamarine for the highest brilliance. This traditional emerald cut brings out the best effect in the bigger size aquamarines. The bigger the size of the stone, the more light it can absorb.

Hence, the colour radiation of the stone will be more. That is why a big aquamarine faceted in an emerald cut looks more colourful. The transparence because of small presence of inclusions in aquamarines, make them particularly suitable for emerald cut. Because, the presence of blemishes disperse light and subdue the colur. But in aquamarine inclusions do not obstruct the refraction and that is why, the emerald cut can give the stone, the maximum intensity of colour. However, regarding the jewelleries, emerald cut aquamarines look great in the more prominent positions of pendants or earrings. As for the emerald cut aquamarine rings they look better in male fingers rather than ladies. With its pale colour and high clarity, aquamarine has won the hearts of modern designers, who with the help of creative cuts, making really unique pieces of aqua jewellery. But emerald cut aqua still retains its classic appeal. For those who have a traditional mind set, as far as fashion is concerned, emerald cut aquamarines continue to be there first and foremost choice.
