Summary: Amethyst, an alluring wine-colored gem, is said to possess the cure to alcoholism. Its healing properties give a person the mental strength to wrestle vices and stay away from addictions. It aids the elimination of negative thoughts and brings one closer to the higher aspects of self.

Ever wondered what it would be like to drink wine without getting intoxicated? Want to remedy your problem of alcohol? Strange as it may seem in today's day and age, amethyst may be the answer to all your troubles.

Purple - The colour of wine. Wine - The colour of the amethyst. The rich purple colour of the amethyst resembles the wine hue and beckons wine-drinkers.

The very name amethyst stems from the Greek word 'amethustos' meaning 'not drunken'. Lore has it that ancient Greeks believed it would ward off the inebriating effects of alcohol or more possibly, the reference was to the wine-like colour of the gem. An explanation of this strange belief may be that water poured into goblets carved from amethyst seemed like wine to the drinker because of its hue. Thus one drank without getting drunk!

In the medieval period, amethyst was still attributed the property of protection against drunkenness, both of alcohol and of compulsive love. It was also believed to shield soldiers from harm in the battlefield and bring home victory over the enemy. Even hunters believed it assisted them in the capture of wild animals.

The Native American Healer 'Luc Bourgault Blue Eagle Ousti Catoui' described amethyst as "an ultraviolet spectrum, symbolizing alchemic processes on both a physical and spiritual level. This stone can, therefore, be used to change bad habits of alcoholism, drugs or other excess of any kind."

Based on this detoxification property, amethyst has been given many names over the ages. It has been nicknamed the "Stone of transformation" and the "Bishop's Stone" among others.

Amethyst is considered to be the healing stone with intense calming and sobering qualities. It enhances mental strength and brings about stability of character. The stone dispels negativity and gives peace of mind to the wearer. It acts as a tranquilizer and heals the trinity of body, mind & soul. A helpful aide in meditation, it facilitates psychic visual enhancement and helps reach out to higher levels of spiritualism. Energetic people can relax under its sobering effect. It helps in sharpening of one's wits.

Age has not been able to curb the spread of the beliefs relating to the amethyst. Every era saw a slight modification in the attributes but the crux remained the same. All views revolved around the healing and detoxifying traits of amethyst. Its almost alchemic nature cannot be denied and is trusted even today.

The origin of this gem and the reasons for its healing powers has its roots in ancient Greek mythology. The legend begins with the god Dionysus - god of wine, festivity, and intoxication. A mortal refused to acknowledge him, and Dionysus, in his fury vowed to turn his wrath onto the first person to cross his path. Along came Amethyst, an unsuspecting young maiden and Dionysus unleashed his tigers on her. He then sat down with a goblet of wine, to watch her suffer. She called out to goddess Diana for help, who turned her into a shimmering white stone to save her. At that time, Dionysus realized the brutality of his actions. He began weeping copiously in remorse. Unmindful of all else but his grief, his goblet of wine spilled all over the stone, staining it purple. Thus the gem amethyst was created. A beautiful pure stone from a stunning young virgin.

Due to its legendary origin, the amethyst is believed to guard a person against the inebriating effects of alcohol. It is said to be the ideal stone for people who are fighting alcoholism. Recovering alcoholics also benefit from its effects. Even those who want to drink without suffering from drunkenness, can partake of its qualities.

Also called 'Nature's Tranquilizer' amethyst soothes the troubled mind and aids in combating all sorts of vices. It increases one's mental strength and lends a sense of power. Addictions are believed to be easily cured with this semi-precious stone.

Along with being a "stone of spirituality and contentment", amethyst facilitates in curing physical afflictions as well. It strengthens the immunity system and is used to treat a wide variety of aliments ranging from toothaches to cancer. It is a remedy for pains, insect bites, skeletal diseases, heart & hearing disorders. It also acts as a check for blood sugar.

Does the above seem a tad unrealistic to you? Maybe even far-fetched? Though today's practical mind may find it difficult to digest that a stone can have such attributes, we must remember that sometimes, the most improbable of options does the trick. Gemstones give out energy, just like our bodies do. The harmonious synchronization of a person's vibrations and those given off by a specific stone have a potent effect on our lives. To be of use, the gem must be in direct contact with the skin. One can wear it on a chain around the neck, as an amulet or a finger ring. Normally, the healing powers are unaffected by sizes or shapes.

So go ahead, make a fashion statement and enjoy the mystical benefits of amethyst at the same time. Being highly affordable, amethyst is the ideal choice for jewelry and your mental well-being. Capture the essence of nature & this dual power in your hands!
