Summary:
Gems are the precious and semi precious stones containing the divine energy that sustains, nourishes and enlivens all the living creatures. There are wide variety of gem stones found, each having it’s own unique characteristic. People wear gemstones for personal growth, healing the diseases and even for looking good. In order to experience the positive effects and power, it is necessary to give special attention to these gems. Colored gemstones require a little extra care to keep them valuable and in good condition. The instructions given by the gemstone seller are often inadequate for maintaining these valuable stones as they are quite delicate.
Diamonds are hard, strong and durable as compared to the gemstones. Therefore, the person wearing gemstones have to be more conscious towards maintaining these precious stones. Gemstones have to be cleaned so as to preserve them for longer time. If stones are worn daily then it becomes crucial to clean. The simplest and easiest ingredient available for cleaning is plain water. It is safe for all the gemstones. In case water seems insufficient to give back the shine of the stone then mild liquid soap can be used. Toothpick should be used to clean any debris from the stone. Detergents and soaps containing ammonia and acetone should be avoided completely.
After cleaning with water, dry with a soft cloth that do not shed threads or fibers. Jewelers use ultrasonic cleanser for cleaning the piece of stone jewelry. Be careful while it gets cleaned as the ultrasonic cleanser might disturb the jewelry setting. Gemstones being fragile are more prone to cracks and splits by this method. And always avoid the ultrasonic cleaning machines. Simple household methods to clean the stones are also quite effective. Boil one cup of water and add 1/2 teaspoon of tea leaves to it. Bring to boil, put off the flame and allow it cool (cool it on the normal room temperature) . Now take a glass bowl, place the stone in it and pour the prepared cooled tea solution over the stone. Keep the stone immersed in the solution for overnight, remove and rinse with clean plain water. Then dry with a wet soft cloth. Another is sand method. Take a glass bowl and pour sand into it. Sprinkle few drops of water on the sand to make it moist. Now, bury the stone in the moist sand without wrapping for 2-3 hours. It will get gems clean but be aware not to bury the gem for more than 3 hours else the polish might be removed.
Other than cleaning the stones, it is important to store the gemstones safely. Jewelry should be stored in soft cloth bags in a jewelry box. This preserves the valuable items and also protects from theft (as the jewelry is not seen directly). Jewelry items should not be piled over one another else it results in scratches and dents. Moreover, the gemstones in the jewelry might get cracked or split. Cotton is used widely for storing the gemstones and the jewelry. Make the cotton layer in the jewelry box and keep the items on the top of it. Then if desired cover the items with another cotton layer. This protects the valuable items from all sort of jerks. Gemstones and gemstone jewelry needs lot of care and precautions. When these items are used in daily life few things are to be remembered and followed like do not to wear the jewelry having stones while gardening, housework, auto repairs or playing sports.
Being very delicate, gemstones have to be worn cautiously. These stones cannot withstand temperature changes at all. Be aware not to wear any jewelry consisting these precious stone during extreme temperature like hot sun, cool pool or hot jacuzzi. Else the temperature changes can cause a crack or shatter in the gem. Stones like emeralds, turquoise, opal, amethyst and kunzite cannot bear heat. Due to heat, the stone might get faded, cracked or turn to be more brittle. Therefore, jewelry item having any of these stones have to be removed while working with hot ovens, washing & cleaning in hot water. Perfumes, hairsprays, lotions, cleansers, nail polish remover etc containing any chemical like alcohol, acetone and chlorine are very harmful to the gemstones. When exposed to these acidic solutions, the stones are more susceptible to loose the natural shine and luster. Emerald are too delicate and should be kept away from all sort of chemicals else it might get dissolved. These are the tips that can keep the gemstone precious and valuable and powerful forever. A little care can give the benefits for the lifetime.
Aquamarine, which is a member of the important beryl family that includes emerald, is less brittle and more durable than emerald. It has a Mohs rating of 7.5 Stones that have a Mohs hardness of less than 8 are highly subject to scratching. However, stones that are harder are not invincible, they are also subject to chipping & fracture.
Summary:
If you are a gem of a person and desire that those glittering stone-studded jewellery of yours retain their twinkling dazzle as you pass them on from one generation to the next as family heirlooms, you need to bestow on them a little TLC. Just like your skin, your clothes, your dog or just about anything in this world, care & attention goes a long way in preserving the radiance of your precious gemstone ornaments. A diamond is forever – so are other gemstones – only if cared for in the proper fashion. To do so, we need to have a wee bit of technical knowledge about our treasured stones. The durability of a stone depends on its hardness – hardness in the jewellery industry is based on a gem-trade standard called the Mohs scale, conceived by Friedrich Mohs in the early 1800s.
The harder the stone, the higher is the Mohs scale rating. Diamonds, of course, have the highest scale rating of 10 and are considered the hardest of precious stones (rubies & sapphires rate at 9) while pearls (Mohs 2.5 – 4.5), amber (Mohs 2-2.5) and coral (Mohs 3.5-4) are some of the softest gems. Therefore, the manner in which we wear, store & clean our gems, affects the longevity of their gleam. Wear it right It is best to remove fine jewellery before engaging in sports, housework, gardening, heavy or dirty work so that they are not subject to harsh impact, abrasives or dirt. A hard blow can chip even diamonds. Pearls, corals & porous stones such as opal or turquoise should be kept away from dirty water & oils to avoid discolouration.
Here are some tips to remember while you dress to kill:
* Always wear jewellery after applying cosmetics, hand lotions or hairspray, to prevent buildup of dirt and oil around the gem, which will keep it from sparkling. Hair-dyes and bleach also adversely affect gems.
* Chlorine in the swimming pool can cause damage to stones & gold.
* Never remove jewellery by tugging on the gemstone as it will become loose in its setting.
* Opals, pearls, coral, amber, turquoise & the softer gems are heat-sensitive & should not be exposed long to the hot sun, kept near radiators or in hot cars. Pearls bleach while amber darkens under extreme exposure to light. Light & heat affects the durability & colour of coloured stones & fades & weakens stones like amethyst, kunzite, quartz, topaz, and aquamarine. Excessive heat can also cause gems to fracture as it removes the natural moisture as well as fillers & oils in treated stones like emeralds.
* Soft & brittle stones must not be subject to hard wear, such as in constant-wear rings. They are better protected in dinner rings, pendants or earrings. Set it right Six prong settings offer more protection to a stone than a four prong one. Bezel settings are secure though difficult to remove & reset. Sharp corners such as the tip of marquise- cut stones are very vulnerable & should be protected by proper setting. Faceted stones with shallow crown angles are also prone to chipping & need extra protection.
Check Point
Check for loose stones & clasps frequently by tapping the piece with your finger near your ear. Pearls need to be restrung every 2 years. Emeralds need to be professionally retreated with oils & fillers after several years of wear & tear. Treasure chest Storing jewellery right is another key to a brilliant treasure cove. Locked away in piles, gems & metals can chip or abrade each other & get entangled. Each piece must be stored separately in velvet, silk, paper or in sections of a fragment pouch or box. Pearls & opals draw moisture from the air & therefore must not be stored in dry places or plastic sealed bags. Pearl & lapis necklaces should be stored flat. Aquamarine jewellery must be kept in a dark place, as it often becomes paler if left out in the sun. It is safe to pad gemstone jewels while travelling.
Sparkling clean Cleaning your priceless gems is a skill that is essential to master if you want your jewellery to outlast you. In cleaning non-porous gems like diamonds & rubies, washing in a weak solution of ammonia, rinsing & drying with a lint-free soft cloth is quite effective. On gems with Mohs hardness of 8 or above, it is safe to gently scrub with a soft toothbrush (though not on the metal setting). A moderate water jet like a dental cleaning appliance can be used to remove bits of grime. Harsh cleansers & vigorous scrubbing can remove the coatings used to enhance the beauty of stones. Aquamarines, which are the universal symbol of youth, hope, and health, are usually heat-treated and sometimes irradiated. These March birthstones should be cleaned in ultrasonic jewellery cleaner or with warm, soapy water and a soft bristle brush.
Do not clean in a home ultrasonic machine. Never use chemical cleaners. Avoid heat and overtly frequent cleaning at all costs as this light blue, blue-green or dark blue stone can pale easily. Like all stones, aquamarines are prone to scratches and brushes must be used gently. Soft gems such as pearls can be cleaned with warm soapy water & a new makeup brush & laid on a soft cloth to dry. Avoid touching the string till completely dry as the wet string can stretch. Porous stones like coral, opal, pearl & turquoise should not come in contact with acids, chemicals or solvents. Ultrasound cleaners are not advisable for gemstones like tanzanite, opals or even emeralds & rubies where the ultrasound removes the oil /resin treatment & expand existing fractures. Wipe gemstones with a clean, damp cloth after each wear to remove chemicals, oils & perspiration. It does not take much to protect your treasury of priceless stones. Just a little attention at the right time ensures that the glow of your scintillating gems matches with the beam in your eyes.
The allergy that occurs by wearing original or artificial jewelry is referred as Nickel dermatitis or Contact dermatitis or Nickel allergy. It is basically a contact allergy. It can happen anytime at any age. Every single human body reacts to different degree with nickel depending upon the tolerance and susceptibility level.
Jewelries are treasured all over the universe. It is but true, that many people cannot wear jewelry inspite of their deep desire to wear it. Jewelry allergy is a common complaint from many people. Few even mention that they are allergic to gold/silver. The main cause of these allergies is the nickel content present in the gold and silver ornaments. Pure gold and silver metal are too soft to be mounted into any form therefore, jeweler mix nickel, zinc and copper into the pure metal to make it little hard enabling to give the desired shape to the metal. Zinc and copper do not harm the skin but skin is always sensitive to nickel. People wearing jewelries are allergic to nickel and not with the jewelry.
Gold itself is reactive and causes allergy but, mostly nickel is the main reason. Gold of any karat would contain nickel like 14K, 18K etc. Less the karat value more shall be the nickel content and so more problems therefore, it is always better to wear high karat gold jewelry. Some people have very sensitive skin thus, as soon as the skin comes in direct contact with nickel it results in allergy. In the same way silver is also mixed with nickel and copper to attain hardness and durability required to make the jewelry items.
Nickel is also used in jewelry made up platinum and white gold. Metal used in artificial jewelry contains nickel too. The platinum and white gold jewelry is quite expensive and beyond the affordability of the common man therefore, cases of allergies to this metal is heard less. Moreover, another reason is platinum and white gold are hardened by palladium that do not cause any allergies. Palladium is more expensive than nickel. Nickel is commonly used for gold and silver jewels as it costs less, gives better hardness and has strong lustrous effect.
The allergy is caused when the skin comes in contact with the metal viz. white gold/yellow gold/silver/platinum consisting nickel. Through the pierced nose or ear hole, nickel penetrates inside the bloodstream of the body where the cells react in opposition to the presence of nickel. Once the cells react negatively, every time the skin comes in contact with the jewelry it causes the skin to erupt. As a result body develops allergy. This entire process may happen within few months or even take couple of years. It is different for all.
Another reason for the allergy is sweat. During the sunny days, when jewelry is worn for a longer duration, skin perspires under the jewelry. This perspiration comes in the contact with the jewelry metal, dissolves the nickel present in the metal and form nickel salts. Salt reacts with the skin and leads to the allergy. Women suffer more with this allergy than men. The symptoms of these allergies are
[1] Bleeding.
[2] Pierced hole in ear or nose swells and yellow coloured liquid known as pus comes out.
[3] There is a constant itching and burning sensation around the area where the skin comes in direct contact with the jewelry item. For example – Gold chain in the neck, earrings in the ear etc.
[4] Few people get a blue coloured patch in their finger, which is visible after the ring is removed. And also skin discolouration takes place.
[5] Rashes or patchy red marks appear on the skin under the jewelry.
It is a common practice to pierce nose and ears with a very thin gold wire. As the skin is tender and sensitive, it gets exposed to nickel present in gold and leads to allergy. In order to avoid the pain caused due to metal allergy, stainless steel needle must be used for piercing. And till the time entire healing of the pierced area takes place, only stainless steel jewelry should be worn. Stainless steel also contains nickel but as it is bound tightly, it seldom comes in direct contact with the skin.
Left over traces of soap and water under the jewelry breaks the protective shield of the skin and allows nickel to come into direct contact with the skin. Similarly, sweat of the body is responsible for the jewelry allergies. Earrings and finger rings are most likely to hold water after the bath. This is the reason why; some people experience awful smell in the earrings once it is removed from the ear. Being extra cautious while taking bath or washing hands can avoid these problems. Always ensure to wipe off the soap and water from the body fully.
While doing the household work, hands are washed countless times in a day. It is very obvious that detergent or other cleansing products and water are left under the ring and causes allergy. Mostly every person wears minimum one finger ring. To protect the fingers from the allergies, apply several coats of clear or transparent nail polish at the back of the ring. In same way nail polish can be applied to other jewelry items too. The problem of allergies will be solved.
Few other precautions that can be taken to avoid allergy are – apply talcum powder before wearing the jewelry to prevent the moisture. Do not wear tight earrings or rings or chains, leave little space so that air passes through it. Change the jewelry items more often. Keep the jewelry clean and dry.
People who are highly sensitive to nickel should get their jewelries lacquered, coated or plated with palladium to protect the direct contact of nickel with the bare skin. Dermatologists offer some medical treatments to cure the allergy. These treatments are effective only for short term. After some time irrespective of the treatment the allergy reappears.
Jewelry enhances the beauty and makes the wearer more charming. Unfortunately, few people have to bear pain of becoming beautiful as they suffer from the allergy. But, with these precautions and care the allergy can be avoided and they can continue to look good by wearing the fascinating jewelry items.

But there is more to getting those eyebrows pierced than just figuring out what kind of a ring would look good. Before you actually decide to go in for a pierced eyebrow, make sure that you are well aware of all the risks that are involved. Here are some of them:
But if you go to a good piercing studio and insist on their using sterilized needles, you could be spared from many of these risks. However, you will still be susceptible to infection if you do not clean the area properly. In fact, once you come out of that piercing studio with the silver ring or diamond stud adorning your eyebrow, it will be up to you to make sure that you take care of that new eyebrow piercing.
One way in which you can ensure that you are relatively free of infections is by choosing the correct kind of jewellery. Remember that you are making a cut in your skin and this will need to heal. So you cannot afford to be a cheapskate when it comes to buying suitable jewellery.
You could go in for implant grade stainless steel jewellery. People do go in for silver rings, but this may not always be a good idea. This is because silver tends to tarnish and this could lead to permanent darkening in the area around the piercing. Gold is one common choice that is very safe when it comes to getting a piercing. Titanium is one of the less popular choices, though you could seriously consider it. But if you are looking to save money, stainless steel is the cheapest option.
Do remember that it is going to be some time before that eyebrow piercing of yours heals completely. Six to eight weeks is generally how long it takes before you can finally start flaunting different styles of eyebrow rings. But you are going to have to treat it with care. Talk to the person who does the piercing for you. Find out what are the best ways of taking care of your new eyebrow piercing. (S)he should be able to provide you with some great tips.
Here are some of the most common tips that should be followed once you have a diamond stud adorning your eyebrow.
You need to take great care of your eyebrow piercing especially because the pierced area is a rather sensitive one. The skin is thin and there is not too much tissue in the layers beneath it. The eyebrows are there to protect the eyes from dust and grime. However, this might lead to the dirt particles affecting the piercing and could lead to an infection. Plus, you have to be extra careful even while changing your clothes for the jewellery could get entangled in them. Ideally, I would suggest staying away from strenuous physical activities where you could bump into other people and end up prolonging the healing process.
If you are willing to take on the responsibility of taking care of your eyebrow piercing, make that trip to the piercing studio. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be “with it”, just ensure that you are willing to dedicate sufficient care to facilitate the healing process.
The gem is fragile and more brittle than other gems. It measures only 3.5 on the Mohs scale and the splendor of the coral will diminish if not taken care of. Like Pearls, Turquoise, some corals can be porous –these gems will get damaged if immersed in water for too long.
An ancient magic stone from the ocean. The coral is taken from the Coral trees that are created in shallow warm or cold ocean waters by tiny living creatures called Polyps. Millions of years are taken to create the coral reefs, which yield these gorgeous gems. Being organic in nature, corals are delicate and break more easily than other gemstones. These gems are found in a several colors – Gold, Black, Blue, White and in an assortment of shades of Red, from pinkish to deep blood red. The Black, Blue, White and Gold corals are rare but the red corals are available in abundance, although the superior quality deep red corals that are highly valued by connoisseurs are rare and command a high price. The best of these red corals are found in Japan and Italy.
If you are being offered Coral Jewellery at throwaway prices, the corals are most probably imitation or of a lower quality. High quality corals are expensive. Corals are opaque and are polished to a high gloss after they have been cut. Fake corals are aplenty and it is difficult to spot an imitation. It is advisable to always buy Coral Jewellery from a reputed store. Corals are believed to have the power to ward of negative influences and endow the wearer with energy and vitality.
Coral Jewellery does not need high maintenance. The gem is fragile and more brittle than other gems. It measures only 3.5 on the Mohs scale and the splendor of the coral will diminish if not taken care of. Like Pearls, Turquoise, some corals can be porous -these gems will get damaged if immersed in water for too long. Take care not to use too much water while wearing coral bracelets or rings. The water may also dull the polish of the coral making it look lackluster and unattractive. If you plan to go swimming, remove your Jewellery before diving in. The chlorine present in the water can cause the corals to spoil.
Store your corals separately. Buy separate pouches for the Corals, so they do not get scratched. Other stones, which measure more than 5 on the Mohs scale, can leave scratches on your pretty red Firestones, do not mix up your corals with other gems. Your corals are precious and are becoming rare. Many countries have passed laws prohibiting corals from being taken out from the reefs, since the coral reefs are important in balancing the ocean’s ecology. Pollution, mining, indiscriminate harvesting of corals have destroyed many coral reefs, which have taken millions of years to form. Anyone who has been diving near a coral reef will agree that these reefs house a wealth of marine life and must be protected.
Regularly check the stones in your Jewellery. If any of the stones are loose, visit your jeweler and have him fix it before you loose one expensive coral from your ring. Beads in a Bracelet or Necklace should be re-strung professionally, if they break. Place your coral beads flat inside a soft, velvet pouch. Clasps are important – tug gently at your Necklaces /Bracelets after wearing it so you are sure the clasp is firmly in place. Loose clasps can result in lost Jewellery.
Harsh cosmetic products can also harm your corals. Use perfumes, sprays before wearing your Jewellery, sometimes the chemicals present in sprays can damage the corals. Do not use good old soap and water or any other detergents to clean corals. If you plan to buy a professional cleaner, check if it is coral friendly. The best way to clean coral is to just wipe it with a soft damp cloth after you have worn it. If your corals do get scratched despite care, take it to the jeweler for a polish; it will look as good as new.
Authentic Coral Jewellery with good quality stones is a pleasure to own. These beautiful gems from the ocean look eye-catching and just a little care will go a long way with corals.
Aquamarines are beautiful gems encasing the myriad colors of the sea. Safeguarding them against harmful chemicals and sharp blows is of primary importance. Timely cleaning will ensure the longevity of the gems and help maintain their unique luster.
Aquamarine – The sea stone. The vivid hues of the sea are captured in this stone and said to be reflected in the personality of the wearer. It is a member of the Beryl family, to which emeralds also belong.
If you want to preserve the original beauty of these gemstones, certain simple guidelines need to be followed.
WEARING
Caring for aquamarines begins with knowing how, when and where to wear them. You must remember the golden rule for jewelry : ALWAYS PUT IT ON LAST AND TAKE IT OFF FIRST (LIFO- Last In First Out).
This means that jewelry should be put on after completion of make-up, which includes hair-spray and perfume. They contain certain harmful chemicals that may lead to damage of the aquamarines. Try to handle the gems as little as possible as natural oil secreted by the skin will dull the their luster over time. Look for any loose gems or clasps before finally putting on the jewelry.
While doing domestic work or any kind of manual labor, remove your jewelry. Take care to remove aquamarine rings while doing gardening. Necklaces or bracelets can break easily if they get caught in a hook or a sharp edge. Aquamarines may crack if they are subject to blows. A sudden mistaken hit may cause the loss of one of your treasures.
When going to the parlor for hair styling remember to remove any aquamarine earrings that you are wearing. The same holds for when you get your hair colored. The chemicals used are often harsh and contain ammonia and alcohol which may tarnish your gem.
Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight as aquamarines tend to become pale. Always take jewelry off before going swimming. The chlorine content of water hinders its sheen.
Follow the golden rule and you shall never go wrong.
Like most other gemstones, aquamarine requires regular care to ensure that it maintains its semblance. A yearly visit to your jeweler is advised for professional cleaning. He is the best person to detect even tiny damages in its early stages. Timely correction will result in your gems looking their finest all the time.
However, there are some things that you can do in your home too. After each use wipe the jewelry with a soft cloth to remove any make-up or skin oil that it may have acquired. Make sure that the cloth used is pure cotton as coarser fabrics tend to graze the surface of the aquamarines. Also avoid using finger-nails while wiping.
In addition to the above, follow this simple cleaning procedure regularly. Soak aquamarine jewelry in Luke-warm water. Add some mild liquid soap and leave for some time. Gently pick up piece by piece and clean it with a soft brush till all traces of grime disappear. Finally, wash off with plain water. Take care not to use a metallic brush as it may scratch the gem. Do the cleaning on a table or flat surface and not in the sink. A slight slip and it may roll into the drain and be lost forever.
Toothpaste, alcohol, acetone and ammonia are often advised as cleaning agents for gems. These tips are best ignored. These products may damage the surface of aquamarines to an extent where professional help would be required to return the gem’s original look.
Avoid using the ultrasonic cleaner for aquamarine jewelry. These machines clean jewelry by a giving out a series of sound waves which crack the gems irreparably. If the instructions specifically state that the particular piece is safe for ultrasonic cleaning, only then go ahead and do it.
Gemstones are most vulnerable when they are worn. However, incorrect storage methods may also hamper them.
What is the correct storage technique, you may ask. Well, the same thumb-rule applies to all jewelry including those set with aquamarines. Each piece should be carefully wrapped in a soft fabric. Alternatively, it may be kept in a box with individual compartments. Harder stones can scratch the surface of aquamarines. On the other hand, aquamarines may cause marks on other stones.
Store your jewelry box in a safe place. Keep aquamarines away from sunlight. Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures.
Aquamarines are very sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Any sort of repair, especially soldering should be done away from the gems.
What can be done if a piece of jewelry set with aquamarines needs to be mended? The stones may be coated with a substance called borax or any other heat-shielding matter to avoid damage while soldering. Immense care must be taken while doing this. If the aquamarines are too valuable, then it is advisable to unset them before applying heat to the piece of jewelry. Unsetting is itself a dicey affair so treat these gems with greater care than diamonds or rubies.
Aquamarines should ideally be set in 18 carat gold or platinum. Nine or even 14 carat gold should be avoided.
Acquisition of good quality aquamarines is an art and the inexperienced should consult a trusted jeweler before making the final purchase. Such valuable gems should be preserved for posterity. Proper and timely care will guarantee a long life.
So go ahead and flaunt your sea stones but remember to handle them with care and stock them safely!
Amethyst in rings will collect soap film, oil and dirt at the back and between the prongs of the mounting and the gemstone. Film from lotions, powders, and skin oils dulls Amethyst and reduces its brilliance.
A member of the Quartz family, Amethyst is its most highly valued and recognizable gemstone. This transparent, purple gemstone is widely regarded as the most beautiful form of quartz. One of the best-known uses of Amethyst is in jewelry. As purple is regarded as the color of royalty, Amethyst is perfect for use in royal jewelry. It has been widely used in the Crown Jewels of England and was also found in the jewelry of ancient Egyptians.
Amethyst is due to the presence of manganese in quartz. The darker colored Amethyst is more valuable and is usually referred to as Siberian. The paler purple gemstone is known as Rose de France. Amethyst is mined in Africa, Australia and some parts of South America. The South American Amethyst is larger in size, but the African gem is known for its darker colors in smaller sizes. It is also found in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, but the quality is not acceptable for use in jewelry.
Once ranked along with diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds as the most precious gemstones, today, Amethyst is valued much lower than the others because of its abundance. Its affordable price makes it a popular choice for jewelry. It has a hardness of 7 on the Moh’s scale and its color ranges from violet to pale-red violet.
Caring for Amethyst jewelry is a matter of common sense. Caring involves cleaning of your jewelry pieces. Amethyst jewelry needs to be cleaned periodically. Amethyst in rings will collect soap film, oil and dirt at the back and between the prongs of the mounting and the gemstone. Film from lotions, powders, and skin oils dulls Amethyst and reduces its brilliance. The lost luster and its brilliance can be restored by cleaning your Amethyst jewelry in a gentle dishwashing liquid and a soft brush. A rinse in warm water and drying with a soft cloth will return your jewelry and Amethyst to its former pristine condition.
Ensure that your jewelry is not subjected to random blows, such as during exercises. Avoid wearing jewelry while exercising. You can cause damage to your beautiful gemstone and dent and/or break the metal of the jewelry. Store your Amethyst jewelry while engaging in such strenuous activities.
Amethyst in your jewelry, in which your precious gemstone has not been enhanced in any way, may fade with long exposure to sunlight. Before using in jewelry, Amethyst is sometimes subjected to heat treatment to enhance its color. Yellow Amethyst is known as burnt Amethyst, as it turns to yellow when exposed to heat. Care needs to be taken to ensure that Amethyst jewelry, made with Amethyst that has been heated to enhance its color, is not exposed to high heat.
If cared properly, your Amethyst jewelry will give you years of wearing pleasure. There are chances that chlorine and salt water may discolor and fade the Amethyst in your jewelry. Ensure you leave your Amethyst jewelry at home when visiting your local pool or when spending a day at the beach.
In jewelry, Amethyst is used with sterling silver or gold. Care needs to be taken to ensure that these precious metals are also not damaged. Sterling Silver tarnishes naturally and needs regular cleaning. Store your Amethyst jewelry with sterling silver mounting, in a self-sealing plastic bag to slow down the tarnishing. Tarnishing can be removed by hand polishing with a soft cloth.
Hold your jewelry by the mounting and not by the Amethyst in it. This can cause the gemstone to loosen and there is a risk of losing it.
Fine Amethyst jewelry can last a lifetime. All it needs is proper care and cleaning. Cleaning your fine Amethyst jewelry is one way of keeping it bright and shinning, as it was on the day you first purchased it. Amethyst is fairly durable but still needs proper care:
* Clean your Amethyst jewelry regularly to remove the oil and soap film that distracts from its beauty.* Remove your Amethyst jewelry while exercising or playing sports. Your gemstone can be chipped or be jarred loose.
* Before wearing your jewelry, check for loose Amethyst.
* Avoid wearing jewelry during housework. Contact with household chemicals, specially ammonia-based, may discolor or damage your jewelry.
* Never store your jewelry in piles or together. This is to avoid scratching the Amethyst in your jewelry as well as the metal mounting. Harder gemstones, such as diamonds, can scratch Amethyst.
* Store your precious Amethyst jewelry in separate sections of the jewelry box or wrap them separately in soft cloths.
* Do not wear your jewelry in swimming pools and on beaches. The chlorine in the pool and the seawater can harm and discolor the Amethyst in your jewelry.
* Gold and sterling silver, the metals used with amethyst in jewelry have low hardness, from 2.5 to 4 on the Moh’s scale. Special care is needed to ensure they are not damaged and dented. Sterling silver being very soft can easily be marred by even fingernails.
* Do not soak your jewelry for extended periods in soap or other such solutions. It may harm the polish of your gemstone.
* Never ever use chlorine bleach to clean Amethyst jewelry.
* Never use toothpaste to clean your Amethyst jewelry. The abrasives in your toothpaste could mar the shine on Amethyst and the mounted metal.
If you do not want to risk cleaning your precious jewelry yourself, you can always have it cared for by a jeweler. There is no reason to believe that with care you may not be able to enjoy your Amethyst jewelry lifelong.

For example- Place colored precious gemstones around the diamond giving it a more splendid look or change the yellow gold setting with white gold or platinum to give more enhanced glance to the stone. Also it might be the case where the present setting is uncomfortable, the gemstone knocks against everything that comes into contact and the wearer has the fear of cracks to appear on the precious stone with the continuous knocking. If the diamond size is more than one carat then only it is suggested to go in for the resetting else it is not worth the cost and risk involved in it. This analysis of facts and thoughts shall enable in taking the right decision as whether to reset the diamond or not and the purpose behind the reset would be achieved or not.
Once the firm decision is made to reset the diamond then there are certain essential steps to be implemented. The first and foremost step is to look for the reliable jeweler who would do the changes in the jewelry pieces. While selecting an individual or company for diamond reset ask for the reports that give the precise details about the diamond like the color, inclusions, carat weight, size and flaws etc. These specifications would act as proof that the gemstone is the same in the new jewelry piece. Also lab report must be taken to ensure the reliability of the jeweler. It is very important to acquire these bona fide documents before handing over the precious stone.
Second step involves asking for the information about the gemstone.
These two steps would help in knowing the jeweler and his motives. In case the jeweler is not willing to answer these questions or give the required documents then surely he is not the right person. His credibility is doubtful. Hence, it would be wise not give him the precious diamond for resetting. If he is truthful and his intentions are clear then he would provide all the asked information and also shall explain the process of diamond reset noticeably well to his clients. He would also suggest the best designs depending upon the choice of the wearer.
Third step is to select the suitable new design. Any design selected must have the prong setting. This is the ideal setting as with prongs around the solitaire makes it safe and well placed. Always make sure that prongs are adequately long to hold firmly the girdle of the diamond. From all four sides the prongs must be tightly held against the gemstone. Stone more than one carat weight is valuable and expensive thus its safety in the design setting is very important to be considered.
The last fourth step is to check the finished jewelry. Once the final ring or pendent or any other selected jewelry piece is handed by the jeweler after the diamond reset check for the setting carefully. Use the magnifying glass to make definite that the precious gemstone is placed with the accurate side up and is in level within the prongs. Then tally the diamond specifications with the details mentioned in the report (the same report jeweler gave before taking the diamond for reset). This is to ensure that the diamond in new design is the same.

Umpteen efforts must be taken before deciding for stone resetting because no damage should be caused to this precious gemstone because “Diamond is the everlasting asset”.
