Autumn, the season when everything turns Golden – one of the many hues of Amber. This beautiful resin comes in a array of colors from Golden to Blue, but mostly it comes in shades of yellow to orange. Nature has given us this gift, which can be extracted, from many sources – earth, sea, and trees. Amber can be mined from inside the earth and is found in many countries, although Amber from Russia is more valued – it is also called Baltic Amber because it is found in the Baltic region.

amber ringAmber is also formed inside the ocean. Sea Amber has a natural polish given by the waves and is relatively expensive. Amber from the sea is often found washed up on seashores. Amber being very light floats on salt water, the waves wash it to the shore and there it lies till it is collected. Hardened resin from trees also created Amber in different shapes. Clear or cloudy, this honey-colored resin has been used since time immemorial for therapeutic and ornamentation purposes. Rings have always enhanced the grace of hands. If you are a ring aficionado, wearing rings at all times, for all occasions, surely an Amber Ring should be in your collection.  (image courtesy: MyAmberShop)

You can choose a ring to suit your style and budget. The design of the ring and the size of the stone will decide the price of the ring. Everyone can find an amber ring to fit into their Jewellery collection. As with other gemstones, Amber too can be pricey or cheap. Baltic Amber Rings (Amber found in Russia) will be more expensive and natural stones will also be priced on the higher end. A Certificate of Authenticity from your jeweler will ensure the stone inside your ring is authentic and if you ever want to sell it, you can always get a good price for a certified stone. Rings – millions of designs to choose from.

Try on the ring and get one that fits perfectly- not too tight, not loose. Comfort is important when buying a ring since your fingers are often in motion. Amber rings do not necessarily have to be Golden, use orange amber with white gold or even green amber (but beware green amber can be just heat-treated yellow amber) with silver for elegance. Ring selection is very personal; so browse the Internet for millions of designs in all price ranges.

The choice is unlimited. Just be sure to buy from a reliable source. When buying Amber Rings, be careful of imitations. Plastic and glass are often passed off as the real thing. A good test of amber is, when touched with a hot needle, the resin gives off a pleasant pine tree fragrance whereas plastic gives off a foul odor and glass will splinter. And remember real amber also floats on salt water. Amber Rings may have inclusions (tiny bubbles dust particles or even tiny creatures), which are a proof that the resin is millions of years old. Place a large, honey colored stone inside a beautifully crafted Gold ring and glow. Add a golden lame gown to it and watch eyes glow with love or envy.

Selecting a ring can be great fun, whether you are buying one to match with your Amber Necklace or just a lone Amber Ring. While buying an Amber ring be very careful, the stone is brittle and cracks easily. It measures only 2.5 on the hardness scale, which means amber is not a hard stone and can break if the ring is worn carelessly. Wear your ring carefully and store it even more carefully. Wrap it separately, away from other Jewellery. It is better not to combine amber with other stones. The amber may crack or chip and the harder stone will remain intact. It will look ugly and you will have to spend unnecessary money to reset your ring with a new amber stone.

The glow of amber has attracted many, and it has been proved by science that amber contains a substance that is therapeutic. The aura of amber conveys its healing powers and bestows good health to those who wear it. Wear a ring of Amber and glow – with health.

Alexandrite rings buying guide

Alexandrite rings buying guide

by Shweta Dhanuka

In natural sunlight or fluorescent light alexandrite appears green. Green colour is attractive and natural, even no trace of brown and gray should exist. On the other hand in indoor bulb light or incandescent light it changes from green to red automatically and naturally.

Russian Alexandrite is a rare stone discovered on the birth of Alexander II in the year 1830 in Russia. Thus, it is named so in his honor (he became Czar of Russia in 1855) . It is among the very few semi-precious gemstones having the unique property of miraculous colour change. The beauty of the stone is further enhanced if set in a finger ring. Alexandrite rings are very attractive. It appreciates the looks and personality of the wearer. If you planning to buy this beautiful gemstone then this article is for you!! Look for the quality and value of alexandrite suitable for the ring on the basis for 4Cs viz. colour, cut, clarity and carat weight.

Alexandrite Ring

Alexandrite Colour

Colour is the most important quality aspect of alexandrite. It’s colour change capability distinguishes it from the rest of the stones. It shows two variations in colour under the different light source viz. natural light and artificial light.

Alexandrite stones from Khazargems

While buying this gemstone look for it’s surprising colour change phenomena. In natural sunlight or fluorescent light alexandrite appears green. Green colour is attractive and natural, even no trace of brown and gray should exist. On the other hand in indoor bulb light or incandescent light it changes from green to red automatically and naturally. Red colour is also bright and attractive. This bright colour change implies that the particular stone is pure alexandrite from Russian mines.

It is also possible that few alexandrite gems show bluish green shade in sunlight while purplish red or dark purple colour in incandescent light. Such stones are pure too. They are from the mines located in other parts of the world like Brazil, Burma, Tasmania, India etc. Only point to take care is that these stones would cost less than that of pure Russian alexandrite.

AlexandriteAlexandrite exhibits colour change as it contains iron, titanium and chrome. These minerals are responsible for this change. And this phenomena is dependent on the strength of the light source. Stronger the light more bright shall be the colour. When it is placed in the ring, the colour change is more clear and precise than in any other jewelry item.

Alexandrite Cut

Alexandrite being 8.5 Mohs on hardness scale, is quite easy and uncomplicated to cut. Rings having wide variety of shapes and styles are available in the market all over the world. Cuts like oval, pear, cushion are quite common for the rings. Rings having heart and emerald cut alexandrite are equally popular. However, large round cut should be avoided as it results in high weight loss of the gemstone.

Alexandrite Clarity

Third most important C is clarity of the gem. Alexandrite possesses few tiny inclusions that reflect back the light. Negative crystals are common inclusions found in all the varieties.

Carat Weight

Last but the most crucial factor is carat weight. The value of the gem in terms of money is largely dependent on this factor. One carat is equal to 0.20 grams. Gems less than 0.75 carat are quite common and sold everywhere. More than 2 carat weight is rare and fetches a huge price.

The carat weight of alexandrite stone in rings start from 0.25 carat to 0.55 carats. However, few rings can also have stones of larger weight i.e. 0.80 carat to 1.80 carat. Larger weight stones are set along with other precious and semi-precious stones. Combination of alexandrite with diamonds is quite common.

Apart from these important 4Cs factors, there are few other points as well to be taken care of while making the purchase of ring holding alexandrite stone. It might further help you in buying the right ring with the true stone.

Alexandrite Stone Size

When selecting the ring with stone, look for proper balance. The width of the ring and the stone size must complement each other. In other words, there should be the balance between the two. Large stone size mounted on the thin ring will not give the desired attractive look as it lacks the balance. Similarly, thick ring having small stone less than 0.40 carat would not be in proportion to each other. Hence, is not suitable.

Alexandrite Stone setting

Gemstone rings are made up of either 14K or 18K yellow gold. Alexandrite also goes well with white gold. Thus, instead of yellow gold 18K white gold can also be used for making alexandrite rings.

While selecting the ring, always look at the back of the ring i.e. inner part of the ring. It too should have a finished look, beveled correctly and polished as that in the front. The stone should be attractive from back/below as well. It should exhibit the similar colour change in different light source.

At the back of the ring, the metal should be cut in square or oval pattern allowing light and air to pass through. If alexandrite is set with diamonds or other stones then it should be set closely together. The setting should be in such a way that all the gems are secured and there is no probability of gems getting dropped out of the ring. The prongs must be evenly balanced around the ring.

Alexandrite Imitations

Finally, be aware of the imitations. Alexandrite do has synthetic forms available in the market. These imitations contain few elements that show the colour change in respective light source. The colour exhibited in sunlight will have more shades of blue than green while in incandescent light it would show traces of violet along with red colour. Therefore, it can be identified as an imitation and should be very cheap in comparison to true alexandrite.

True and pure alexandrite is procured from the Ural Mountains of Russia. These are rarely found and show bright green and red colours only. Other genuine alexandrite are found in Hematita mines of Brazil, island of Sri Lanka , Burma and Tunduru. These stones would be bluish green in daylight and red purple or dark purple in incandescent light. Andhra Pradesh region in India and few parts of Tasmania and Zimbabwe also yield good quality of true alexandrite.

Price

Alexandrite is the highly priced gemstone in the world. As mentioned earlier, the price would be dependent on carat weight and the intensity of the colour change. Stone with few inclusions, intense colour change and more than one carat weight would be the most expensive. Further, if it happens to be a pure Russian alexandrite then the price would touch the sky.

If alexandrite from Brazil, Sri Lanka, India , Zimbabwe and other places exhibits strong colour change then it would be expensive too but less than the pure Russian stone. But, in case the colour change shows any trace of brown then it shall lower the price of the stone.

Precaution & Care

It is always recommended not to remake the jewelry having stones again and again. Once made should be treasured for the lifetime. But, in case it has to be changed then be extra conscious while getting alexandrite remounted. Jeweler’s torch emits heat that deteriorates the colour change capability of the gemstone.

Avoid wearing alexandrite rings while working with chemicals and other harsh solutions. Also it must be protected from sharp blows, scratches and rapid temperature changes else these might affect the colour change of the stone.

Russians believed alexandrite brings good omen. Hopefully, it can do it even today. So Happy Wearing !!!!

The name is derived from the Greek word amethystos, that means ‘not intoxicated’. Therefore, it is closely associated with the belief that it protects the wearer from the drunkenness.

Amethyst, the purple semi precious gemstone makes women beautiful and offers
them peace of mind and security of self being. Every woman having the love for
gemstones and little money can wear it. Amethyst is the most affordable
gemstone. It is February birthstone and 4th & 6th anniversary gemstone.

The name is derived from the Greek word ‘amethystos’, that means ‘not
intoxicated’. Therefore, it is closely associated with the belief that it
protects the wearer from the drunkenness. The purple colour was considered as
wine colour. It was also a royal colour that was part of ancient crowns and
jewels. In past, royal women had great love and passion for amethyst rings. Even
today the passion and demand for these beautiful rings continues.

amethyst ringsAt the jewelry shop, there are many varieties of amethyst rings available in
attractive designs. While selecting the ring, begin with the colour of the
stone. Amethyst comes in all shades of purple. It is a popular choice because of
the transparent purple colour. Deeper the purple shade better it is. Lighter
shades are also fine but dark shade enhances the beauty of finger rings. It
ranges from pale lilac to all shades of purple.

Few stones can also exhibit violet colour. Amethyst is procured from metamorphic
and igneous rocks having coarse grained silicon minerals. It contains iron
element that is responsible for violet colour. The preference should be for
those rings having medium to dark purple colour. Check that the colour is
saturated and even throughout the stone. And all rings should have vitreous
luster.

Next comes clarity. Amethyst is a clean gemstone. It is free from all sorts of
inclusions and flaws. Being quite transparent, it is bright and sparkles.
Sometimes it posses very minor inclusion. Such stones if having dark purple
shade, can be selected. The price should be very less.

After checking the clarity, the cut of the stone had to be selected. A good cut
enhances the overall beauty of the ring. The cut should have fine proportions,
even sides and well polished. Amethyst is a hard stone so cutting is easy and
simple. Market offers wide variety of cuts in different styles and shapes. It is
often cut in round shapes so as to maximize the colour especially when there is
uneven distribution of colour. When the colour is evenly distributed then other
shapes are preferred.

Pear, heart, oval and marquise cut are quite common for rings. Square shape
amethyst rings are available too. These days very attractive designer rings are
being made. Everything looks very beautiful and versatile. It is hard to select
one. The selection should be done on the basis of long lasting feature and
durability. There should be a proper balance between width of the ring, stone
size, ring setting and matter used for making the ring.

Amethyst rings are made up of silver, platinum, 14 K & 18K white gold and 14K &
18 K yellow gold. The size of amethyst stone starts from 0.40 to 1 carat. It can
be single stone or 2-3 stones combined together pushing the total weight of
amethyst to 3 carats. In a single stone ring the stone size can even go up to 2.5
carats.

For rings, amethyst is paired with other stones having prong setting. Take care
the center piece i.e. amethyst stone should be larger than other stones and
prongs holds the stones properly. The stones should be secured. The rings made
up of yellow gold having amethyst paired with diamond and pearl looks wonderful.

Mostly, amethyst is paired with diamonds. But, designer rings having amethyst
combined with other semi precious stones like alexandrite, aquamarine etc are
also created. Only consideration should be that the stones together give the
complete finished look. In other words, whatever combination is designed it
should complement each other. Rest rings can be selected on the basis of
gemstone liking and the pocket of the individual.

As amethyst is available in large quantities around the world, it has become
quite affordable. United states has huge deposits of amethyst and so is gemstone
land Brazil. Thus, price is relatively less than other gemstones. Other
countries that procure amethyst are Russia, Sri Lanka, India, Mexico, Canada and
African countries – Namibia, Madagascar, Uruguay and Zambia.

Amethyst is priced moderately. In all price budgets this gemstone can be
purchased. Deeper purple colour is considered as high quality amethyst and
becomes more valuable in terms of money. Price reduces with the reduction in the
intensity of colour of the stone. When shade gets lighter, price becomes less.
And also gems having violet, blue or gray tint in it are cheaper. The most
expensive amethyst stone that fetches a high price per carat would possess dark
purple shade and in different light sources produce red flash effect when moved
in circular direction. However, such amethyst are quite rare to be seen.

Be careful with the lab created amethyst. It can easily be synthesized with the
modern methods and technologies. Synthetically produced amethyst produces colour
zoning that resembles chevron (V-shaped mark in military uniform). These stone
looks awful in rings so avoid it. Moreover, natural stones are always better
than the man made stones. Thus, ensure the seller is genuine and reliable.

Amethyst rings can be cleaned in the ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. In case all the
risks are to be avoided then the simplest method is to clean the ring with Luke
warm soapy water and a soft bristle brush. After the wash, wipe it off with
cotton or soft cloth.

Keep the rings and other amethyst jewelry in a fabric or cotton lined box.
Although amethyst is a hard stone having 7 Mohs hardness and can bear the rough
work but, prevention is always better for long lasting retention. So protect it
from scratches, sharp blows & excessive heat and look beautiful forever by
wearing amethyst rings.

Choosing the ring style

There are many options available but the most popular is a single large pearl embedded on a yellow gold or platinum setting. Like a solitaire diamond the single pearl ring looks grand and outstanding if you choose the right pearl quality and color. The ring base can be a simple holder or can also be much more ornate by having a little more design to it. The design style of the gold setting should be such that it compliments the beauty and luster of the pearl and together the setting and the pearl enhance the beauty of the wearer. You also can have other gemstones like rubies, amethyst or diamonds surrounding the pearl. This kind of combination jewelry is in fashion and a large number of designs are available in the market. You want to have an exclusive pearl ring then just pearl mixed with no other gemstones will be perfect. Simple yet stylish, pretty and powerful.

Choosing the ring setting.

While choosing the setting you have to keep in mind the complexion of the person you are buying the gift for, for a fair skinned woman yellow gold setting will suite the best. The lady is towards a darker skin color then a platinum or silver setting will compliment her beauty. Finally the choice of setting depends on personal taste and budget available.

Choosing the pearl for the ring.

Pearls come in many varieties and colors. There is the natural saltwater variety that’s the costliest. There are many others like fresh water pearls, Akoya pearls from Japan, Tahitian pearls, these are the cultured varieties. Basically pearls are naturally formed inside an oyster, when an irritant from the outside environment enters the insides of an oyster, to protect itself from the intruder the oyster starts secreting a substance called nacre which then settles layer by layer on the irritant object. In the course of time this settlement of nacre forms a sphere shaped gem called the pearl. The whole process is time taking and hence if left on the nature an ordinary man wouldn’t have been able to afford a pearl as it would be the costliest for its rarity. The beauty and popularity of the pearl led to, cultivating pearls artificially in lakes and rivers and now the same natural pearl luster is available in an affordable range. The natural and cultured pearls are real pearls rest are just imitations. You can choose from the wide variety available the right size that will promptly look pretty on the delicate fingers of the lady. The bigger the pearl the costlier it is. The pearl has to be big to suite the finger and it can’t get bigger then a medium size as physically for a finger ring it’s not possible. You could opt for a pearl which is the right size and the highest quality as for a finger ring you will want only one single pearl and just to save on some cash don’t compromise on the quality of the pearl. The jewelry piece should be exotic and make a bold style statement, something your woman would love to flaunt and collect compliments for. While choosing the pearl always look for size, color, luster and surface fineness. Avoid pearls with less luster, dents and abbreviations on its surface.

Choosing the pearl color

As per norm pearl is white or cream but even black, grey, pink and lavender colored pearls are available. They are natural high quality pearls only that now there is much more color choice. For a finger ring a black Tahitian pearl on a white gold setting surrounded with diamonds would be a striking piece of jewelry.

The Amethyst bespeaks royalty and this stone can even overpower the personality of the person wearing it just by its royal appearance. The stone looks best when it is set in gold with diamonds, the combination of purple and diamonds is a classic. Of course, a single large Amethyst ring or a large pendant in dozens of tiny purple stones can catch the eye without the help of any other gems.

Jewellery without gemstones is like Cake without Icing. It looks attractive but lacks the decorative, distinctive touch of colored gems. Adding gems in basic gold/silver or platinum Jewellery gives it dash of panache and elegance. The appearance and price of the ornament depends on the stone, setting and cut of the stone. It can range from formal, semi-formal, casual or just junk Jewellery. Enhancing the glitter of precious metals is the gorgeous stone – the Purple Amethyst. Purple is the color of Royalty and many stately families possess Amethyst ensembles, antiques – made from the highest quality Amethyst stones.

Contemporary Jewellery designers have taken the purple of the Amethyst and combined it with Emeralds, Sapphires, Pearls, garnet and even Rubies to offer a palette of colors for fastidious customers. No excuse for not owning a piece of Amethyst Jewellery.

Like most gems, color is an important deciding factor in grading Amethyst. A deep, natural purple color is more valuable than a lighter shade. Also like most gems, synthetic Amethyst is often passed as the real gem. The synthetic stones look so much like the natural stones that sometimes even Jewelers can be fooled. In fact, many jewelers buy rough synthetic at almost the same prices that they would pay for natural stones. The advantage is the same quantity of synthetic rough yields more stones than from the natural Ametyst rough. Technology advancements which made it possible to grow all kinds of quartz in laboratories under artificial conditions and these laboratory grown amethyst are also sold in the market as the natural stone. It is difficult for even the trained eye to differentiate the natural from the synthetic, although stores of repute do declare if an Amethyst is synthetic.

The Amethyst is used not just for Jewellery but for Electronics and Crystal Therapy also. An Amethyst placed on the Crown Chakra (on the head) is believed to be beneficial in bringing harmony and peace to the mind. This stone has also been associated with celibacy and even today many Priests/Monks wear purple cloaks and even Amethyst rings to signify that they are not a part of the material world. Even the Buddhists believe in the power of purple and it is common to see Amethyst rosaries in Tibet. Healing, increasing psychic activity, lowering blood glucose and even inducing sobriety are among the many superstitions attributed to the Amethyst.

Amethyst is a hard stone, measuring 7 on the Mohs scale. This makes it perfect for Jewellery. Being a hard stone, it can be fashioned and cut into almost any shape. Rings, Necklaces, Earrings or Bracelets – this vibrant stone available in many shades of violet make a passionate statement at every event. Whether you like light lilac or a deep royal purple, there is sure to be an Amethyst that you will want to own. But be sure to store it separately, it can cause other stones, which measure lower on the Mohs scale to be chipped. On the other hand, even the Amethyst can be scratched or chipped if a stone like a diamond – measuring higher on the Mohs scale, rubs against it.

If you know an Aquarian, gift them an Amethyst, they will remember you for the rest of their life. It is also the anniversary gemstone for the 4th and 6th year of marriage. This passionate stone loses its color when heated, turning to a pale yellow from its natural violet shade. As with all Jewellery, protect your Amethyst from conditions that can cause it harm. Chemicals from hair sprays or perfumes, exposure to the sun and most important, if you need to get your Amethyst Jewellery polished or repaired, the stones have to be removed from their setting by the Jeweler before the metal is heated. It is easy to maintain the Amethyst. Just clean it with warm water and a bit of gentle soap and a soft brush to remove the grime. Or you can even use an Ultrasonic cleaner.

While buying any Amethyst Jewellery, be sure to check the stones for a clear color with no cracks or other inclusions in the stone. Also be sure to buy from a reputed store that will be able to guide you to the right stone to match with your personality and budget. Prong Setting, Bezel Setting, Pave Setting, Channel Setting, Invisible Setting are the most common setting techniques for gemstone in your ornaments.

How to Evaluate Jewelry Setting before buying

Do you murmur the famous song of Nicole Kidman “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” and want to apply it to your girlfriend in her next birthday? Even if your pocket does not permit a huge budget for a larger diamond, don’t worry. You can just walk into the famous gemstone mart and ask for the special illusion setting to elude your small diamond magnified to impress your girlfriend.

Before delving into the setting techniques you need to know the various popular settings and pros and cons for each of them. Prong Setting, Bezel Setting, Pave Setting, Channel Setting, Invisible Setting are the most common setting techniques for gemstone in your ornaments.

Prong Setting

Lets start with Prong Setting, the most common types of setting. The metal claws hold the gemstone and thus it is also known as Claw setting. Claws are bent over the edge to give the stone the extra security. The main advantage is as the claws occupy very small places; the most of the gemstone remain exposed glittering its own beauty. It’s a faster methodology and can accommodate any size and shape. The claws normally vary between four and six. The prong setting is cheaper and its also convenient for maintaining or cleaning purpose. The major disadvantage of Prong setting is the claws are often prone to catch clothing mainly woolen types. Thin, flat claws can eventually break risking your precious gemstone. Again very large claws will reduce the glitter of the gemstone. V-shaped claws are desirable sometimes. You must check whether the stone is tightly fit under the claws at an even height and the edges of the claws are not broken or there should not be any empty space left between the claws and the gemstone. The claws should reach adequately inside the stone, not merely the edges. You must ensure that the claws are small enough to allow the gemstone to touch your skin directly. Solitaire engagement rings are the classic example of Prong settings.

Bezel Setting

The most ancient setting technique is Bezel Setting, which holds the gemstone just like a picture frame. Its like a collar of Gold or silver, which is almost wrapped around the gemstone. As you can apprehend how much careful, the tailor needs to be, while he is designing the collar of your shirt, the similar effort and attention is required for the Bezel Setting to fit the stone properly. Enough caution is to be taken so that the glittering effect of the stone is never reduced to due to the setting. Bezel Setting gives the designer more variety of options for its ultramodern look. A version of the Bezel Setting is called the Flush setting, where the gemstone is sunk into the mounting and the surface has got a window cut. You must check the evenness of the lip of the Bezel or Flush setting and any distortion or hitches need to be avoided. The final checking should be whether the gemstone has been fitted tightly from all sides. The wide open face of the gemstone allows the cleaning and maintaining work easily and the tiny edge of the collar protects the gemstone perfectly.

Here are some tricks. If a rim of white gold or platinum encircles a white diamond, the diamond appears larger. A golden yellow bezel setting throws yellow tints on a white diamond making a brilliant look of the ring.

Pave setting

The best way to compromise the quality with your lower budget is the Pave setting. Small pieces are paved inside the setting. Small pieces are carefully set with beads or grains of metals, usually gold or platinum to define a carpet of brilliance. This is mainly used for diamond rings, where the setting appears to be a continuous surface of diamonds. In this case, you must ensure the evenness of both the gemstone as well as the beads. If the beads or grains are not evenly spaced it is sure to reduce the glimmer. Diamonds engagement rings and earrings are often use Pave settings. Generally the small pieces like princess cut diamonds cost reasonably lesser than the larger stone, but the illusive appearance will enhance its value.

Channel setting

Now if you divert to the paradigm of the bracelet world, the first setting, which comes up in mind, is the Channel setting. The gemstones are held between the two tracks of the U-shaped formed by the ornamental metal. This is most useful for the square shaped gemstones, which can sit side by side. Sometimes additional claws are set to hold the gemstone tightly. It started with the eternity brands and tennis bracelets, now-a days a variety of engagement rings also use channel setting. Some famous shopping sites like eBay and MSN are offering various engagement rings using the channel settings.

Invisible setting

Do you want a complete visibility of the gemstone? Then you need the most costly and posh setting, the Invisible setting. The gemstone appears to float and no gold or metal is visible in the surface. Which mechanism shows this floating appearance? Gemstones are properly cut and shaped and a net of wires hold the stones tightly. Either the stones are grooved on the back or pins, bars are fitted externally to the gemstone to facilitate the wires. In a proper setting the gemstone will never wobble and you must ensure that the levels of the gemstones are perfect. The legendary art deco period of 1908 in Paris witnessed the usage of invisible settings by Van Cleef and Arpel. If you want a look and feel visit the Fancy Diamond Inc website to check the yellow gold Invisible setting Diamond ring.

There are some gemstone specific settings. Like illusion setting for diamond, where a mirror-like plate is used to enlarge the appearance of the small diamond. Simple colour mix and match also become useful for enhancing the glory of the jewel. Like light yellow diamond in gold will design the yellowish tint of the diamond where as the same diamond in any white-metal setting will appear whitish.

We suggest you to visit a good gemstone shop like Gem Hut, where you can choose your gemstone, the ornament metal and the setting on your own to decide which one is the best combination to hypnotize.

Georgian Age

During the rule of King George the Third and Fourth and then King William the fourth, a lot of jewelry was made. Especially the concentration was on rings .Not only the noble ladies but also noblemen wore rings as a part of their daily attire. After the French revolution, most of the royal and noblemen jewelry were lost, looted, sold and taken out of the country. Many people donated their jewelry and received black cast iron replicas and this started the trend of antique look jewelry.

Jewelry during this period was balanced and elegant. It was simple. The backs of the rings were covered with a plate or closed setting. Most of the pieces were reconstructed. It was quite evident that it lacked imagination. Greek and Roman look was in vogue. Napoleon had brought back the Crown jewels of France and had them refitted to look fashionable. With no liquid assets to help them, creativity reached out to various ways to enhance the jewelry. Chaumet was Napoleon’s official jeweler and he favored the deep rose color, which was dominant.

Rings were worn in each and every finger. Roman and Greek figures, laurel leaves, arches, eagles were set in precious metal. Shell, mother of pearl, enamel, mosaics with fixed backing were made. This new way of mounting made the gems appear large and catch the light. Moreover the briolette cut deepened the color of the gems.

In 1820, return to nature was the call. Colors were white, yellow, lilac and light green. Roses, morning-glories, fuchsias, ears of wheat and different types of leaves were in fashion. Cameos and Intaglios from Italy celebrated a great era in France. Painted enamel came out and a special way of enameling was in demand. People were also sporting mourning and memorial rings, in black enamel fenced by gold or other metal. Half loops, double rows, bands, large gemstones, clusters of pearls, topaz, amethyst, family crests, coats of arms, engraved rings were worn all the time.

Victorian Age Antique Rings

Queen Victoria was young, energetic, filled with youthful vitality and very much in love. This was reflected in the taste of the court .Jewelry was bold and striking. It was gaudy, rich, lush and ornate. It was more a reflection of wealth than taste. Matching suites, cabochons of four or more pieces were in. Ivory, tortoise shell, seed pearls and coral were in demand.

Victoria’s serpent motif was popular. Rings were ornate and had space to put hair or a photo of a loved one. The lid of the ring could be raised. The lid was covered with minute multi colored gems. Granulating gems with grains of gold, made famous by the Etruscans were hugely popular. Rings were huge and eye catching in the first half of this period. The rings followed a fixed style. Floral and Fauna motifs were used. A huge leaf encircled with small diamonds or a three leaved flower, or a sheaf of wheat in pearls were made into rings. Huge gems were flaunted. It was a time for color and luxury.

The self absorbed nature of the Victorians, started waning during the later half of the era. Social consciousness had a huge setback on jewelry. Big started getting smaller. Delicate, less gold, softer forms, gentle colors became the trend. Stud was invented. Rings became delicate looking. Gems got smaller. Large, huge baubles got replaced by South African diamonds. Mauve, yellow, tender greens encircled a diamond.

White diamonds with brilliant gold, peridots, sapphire, tourmaline and pearls were used heavily in the rings.

Art Nouveau

This was considered the most sensual period in jewelry making. Innocence lost its virginity. Passion made forays into the minds of the people. Suggestiveness was the motif. It made the Whiplash, a design of swirling lines famous. It was the union of the flowing woman form with the mysteries of nature. Unlike the Edwardian age it used inexpensive material to create master pieces. The rings were made of metal, ivory, horn, stained, polished and studded with precious stones. The jewelry was more crass than stylish. This influence was heavily promoted by clubs and societies which sprung up all over Europe, under various names and titles. L’Art Nouveau was the name coined by Bing the French jeweler. This is the name it still retains.

Bright colors, bees, wasps, reds, greens, buds, flowers, butterflies and grass hoppers, inundated the world of jewelry and art. Rings had Medusa with flowing hair, animals and insects, entwined serpents, all in a sensual form. Eroticism was the mood in the motifs. Enameled rings, rings with hollows filled with different colored enamels or transparent enamel, melted glass or the stained glass look was in vogue.

Art Deco

Geometry and symmetry was the line that was followed. Crystals with platinum were combined. The style was graceful and feminine. Coco Channel popularized the use of plastic and false or artificial jewelry was introduced. Egyptian, African, Native American motifs were intermixed. Jewelry was graceful and feminine.

Elaborate Art Deco Engagement rings were extremely popular. The centre piece was surrounded by smaller gemstones, which were the focus of the ring. They were set in intricate and delicate designs, which were abstract or geometrical in shape. The setting was usually invisible.

The rings were made with rhinestones, diamonds and other colored gems. The caliber cut, cabochons, heart and spear shapes were popular. Cocktail parties were trendy and this led to the entry of the Cocktail ring. The style of these rings was sophisticated and sleek. The rings usually had a center piece, which was faceted, while the accent gems were either round, baguette or sometimes carved leaves were also used. Rings were made of all types of metal. Chrome, Silver, Gold, Platinum and had crystals imitating diamond, to fit the wallets of fashion conscious commoner. The band of the ring was usually studded with brilliant diamonds.

Retro-The Duke and Duchess of Windsor was the talk of the world. Americanism was the trend. Synthetic stones and fake jewelry ruled the roost. Therefore larger than life jewelry, multi colored gems like citrine and aquamarine, Hollywood influence, patriotic themes were in. The flatness or the single dimension of the jewelry of Art Deco was replaced by chunky, sculptured and carved look. The Spanish Crown jewels met the same fate as the French Jewels. Lots of exclusive and expensive jewelry came into the world market.

Rings were raised rectangular, domes or scrolls. Gemstone bands were also popular. Prong setting, shield, heart, marquise, surrounded by diamonds were crafted in alloys of gold. That is gold was mixed with copper for a reddish tint or silver for a whitish look. Old fashioned cuts were redone in modern cuts. There was a lot of color. Rings were in shape of charms, carved mountings, illusion settings were also done. Corded wire work studded with gems, diamond bands, ribbons, bows and knots were shaped into rings.
